Charity Turner Music

Drummer | Live & Session,
Vocalist,
Songwriter & Producer

BIO

The youngest of five siblings born to missionary parents, Charity Turner’s love of music began early. Inspired by her gospel-artist mother and the sounds she encountered while living with her family in remote regions of South East Asia, she penned her first song at age six. Her fascination with rhythm can be traced to an orphanage in India where she witnessed Indian drumming in all its forms. At eight years old she picked up her first pair of drumsticks and studied drumming under renowned jazz drummer David Atkins in Sydney, Australia.

By the age of eleven Charity was recording and touring gospel music with her mother, Helen Turner. During her school years at a renowned Sydney Performing Arts High School, she formed an all-girl band while also writing and recording gospel music under Southern Songs (CCLI licensing). While studying with Billy Hyde’s Drum Academy, Milan Troha, and Mitch Farmer, she became a skilled drummer, regularly placing in the famed Billy Hyde National drum-offs under 18's, where she appeared as the only female.

After high school she packed her stick bag and guitar, following her heart (and another pastor’s daughter) to Broome, where she spent time writing, drumming, and reframing her worldview. For many years she lived between Australia and Los Angeles, where she was a session drummer for a variety of artists domestically and internationally and had a publishing deal. To further refine her knowledge and craft, she completed a Certificate in Music Production through Berklee College of Music, USA and began producing music. During this time, she cemented a reputation as a skilled drummer, singer-songwriter, producer, and equal rights advocate.

More recently, Charity has toured, recorded with, and shared the stage with indie pop darlings KITA ALEXANDER The VeronicasEmily Rinkand Indigenous icons NIDALA and Jessica Hitchcock. She’s drummed at a range of festivals, including Party In The Paddock, Changing Tides Festival, Out Of The Woods, Play On The Plains and many more. 2024 is set to be a big year, both domestically and internationally, with upcoming tours including the Summer Salt Festivals and Kita Alexander's 'Young Love' Album Tour as well as Splendour In The Grass.

Charity is passionate about supporting other women drummers and has held workshops with youth helping them find their voice and rhythm in life through music. She hopes to utilise her platform as an artist to continue to promote a more equal and inclusive society for people of all genders and sexual orientations.
